1999年，旧金山交响乐团的指挥Michael Kamen突发奇想找来了重金属乐队Metallica，用一支90人的交响乐团与Metallica一起演奏他们的重金属作品，曾执导过《教父》和《惊情四百年》的导演Francis Ford Coppola也不甘寂寞，加入了演出的阵营，担当起铜管乐的演奏，《S&M》就是这次演出的现场专辑。S&M的含义就是Symphony & Metallica。唱片公司称这张专辑“融合了全美最强有力的交响乐团和全球最强有力的乐队”。总的来说这张双CD专辑的编曲很令人失望。重金属乐队的演奏足够震撼，交响乐团的演奏也算得上动听，前提是让他们分别演奏。事实证明重金属乐队和交响乐团很难融合在一起，那感觉就像让一个婊子和一个修女共处一室，出问题是早晚的事情。结果就是婊子不像个婊子，修女不像个修女。不过这张专辑中有那么几首歌曲还是不错的，The Memory Remains便是其中之一，因为在这首歌曲里，修女们的演奏听上去像个婊子。
ash to ash，dust to dust唱得多好呀，这才叫摇滚，足以让国内这些披着摇滚外衣的伪摇滚骗子们羞愧的像一粒粒ash和dust。
